Doughty’s Deep

I’ve been digging Mike Doughty’s Haughty Melodic, of late. According to Doughty’s site, the record was recorded in Minneapolis with producer Dan Wilson. The pair recruited a number of the Twin Cities’ finest musicians to contribute to the album, instilling Doughty’s songs with a colorful, ornamented sound that combined the melancholy and psychedelic.

The former Soul Coughing frontman keeps an active blog where fans can email him photos from his gigs. I really like how down-to-earth and accessible Mike is.

If you have yet to listen to Doughty’s latest release, you’re missing out on one of the great protest songs of our time, “Busting Up A Starbucks.”

This bitter drink
Has made you drunk
The thoughts you think
Become unthunk

Interestingly, Doughty’s not ripping on the omnipresent coffee chain here, rather the Nike-clad punk who kicked the store’s plate glass window in during Seattle’s anti-WTO rallies/riots.
